What’s Your Training Looks Like

Marine Ecology & Coral Reef Lembongan

Participating in the Marine Ecology Nusa Lembongan course unveils a captivating world of underwater exploration. The course spans over 3.5 days and involves 6 open water dives.

Initially, on Day 1, we welcome you to the fascinating empire of coral reefs. Being a theory-based afternoon, we will study the specifics of coral anatomy, biology, and the vital function of corals in photosynthesis. Moreover, our schedule goes deeper, covering other marine organisms such as coral reef algae, sponges,  and seagrass and how to identify fish and invertebrates.

Transitioning to Day 2, we move to Marine Ecology as a discipline. The day begins with 2 ocean dives where you will practically learn how to Identify fish, substrates, and invertebrates. Upon returning to the dive centre, we will head back into the classroom for an additional lesson on Marine Ecology.

Advancing to Day 3, the course shifts focus to ocean pollution and cleanup. We will discuss human impacts such as overfishing, ocean pollution, and the looming threat of plastics. Consequently, participants engage in a hands-on beach cleanup, practicing appropriate debris collection.

Your morning will start with 2 dives. Dive 1 and 2 will focus on identifying and gathering more information on substrates, fish, and invertebrates.

Alongside this, we will return to the dive center and learn about the global distribution of corals and their complexities. Most importantly, we address coral bleaching, its causes, and its impacts on reef health.

Significantly, our course highlights the importance and threats to the Coral Triangle. This part of our program aims to illuminate the region’s significance and the current threats it faces.

Lastly, on the final day, we focus on human impacts on the marine environment and our role in mitigating them. Our last 2 dives of the course will involve identifying substrate, fish, and invertebrates, as well as conducting a reef survey using a Transect line.

The course wraps up with a hands-on beach clean-up session, followed by data collection on the types of debris collected. This experience offers a first-hand understanding of our human footprint and actionable steps to reduce it.

To sum up, the Marine Ecology Nusa Lembongan course is not only informative but also action-oriented. It’s designed to provide a deep understanding of the marine world and our role in protecting it.
