What Does Your Training Entail

Reef Monitoring Nusa Lembongan

Initially, we lay a solid foundation with coral reef ecosystems and species identification. Next, we expand upon this knowledge, progressing to practical reef health monitoring, and practicing different survey techniques such as Coral Watch and the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method.

The completion of these experiences, in essence, equips you with practical skills and invaluable knowledge, enabling you to partake in the important task of reef conservation. Here is how our Reef Monitoring in Nusa Lembongan program works on a day-to-day basis.

On Day 1, we jump into the world of coral reefs, exploring their structure, species, and the roles of various organisms within the ecosystem.

Transitioning to Day 2, we tackle fish and invertebrate identification, narrowing down thousands of species into manageable groups. Two dives allow for practical experience in identifying various species.

Advancing to Day 3, we introduce the Reef Health Monitoring method by Coral Watch. This globally recognized organization focuses on monitoring reef health and bleaching. The day’s dives will revolve around practizing this survey technique in the depths of the sea.

Day 4 offers insights into the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method, a well-established coral survey technique. Our dives entail practising this method, recording substrate, fish, and invertebrates along the transect line.

On Day 5, we introduce another coral survey technique – the photo quadrat method. The dives are designed to allow you to practice this method, capturing substrate details within a given area.

Lastly, on Day 6, we will conduct our last 2 dives while practising coral survey methods. Once we have returned to the dive center, we will then analyse and log the data collected, together.
